Just got done reading a press release about the National Semiconductor physical layer transceiver chip, part # DP83640 (DP83640 - Precision PHYTER - IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol Transceiver.) A link to the datasheet for the DP83640 can be found at http://www.national.com/ds/DP/DP83640.pdf

According to the article (in the November 5, 2007 issue of Electronic Design) this chip is unique in that it has full implementation of IEEE-158 PTP (precision time protocol) standard. The IEEE-1588PTP is a technique for synchronizing the clock signals in one part of a network with clocks distributed throughout the network. One of the clocks being used as the grandmaster and all others as slaves.

That said, the DP83640 from National Semi requires specific ethernet magnetics for optimal performance. As a distributor for Bel Fuse Inc, we recommend trying one of following options from Bel Fuse. Please note that all four of these parts are equivalent to the Pulse devices approved by National Semi / NSC (Pulse H1102, H1102NL, H2019, and H2019NL)

The first two options are for ethernet only (no POE / power over ethernet features)

Four Port RJ45 Connector for 10/100 Ethernert (with LED's) 0810-1X4T-36-F (Bel Fuse MagJack)

Had a customer call on Friday looking for a good four port RJ45 connector with integrated 10/100 ethernet. I suggested the BEL FUSE 0810-1X4T-36-F. The 0810-1X4T-36-F is a 1 high by 4 wide "harmonica" style RJ45 connector or "jack" with integrated 1:1 TX/RX turns ratio magnetics, ans is also rated for extended temperature -40 to +85 c. This unit is optimized for use with Auto MDix physical layer transceiver chips (PHY.) The connector is fully shielded for EMI minimization, and includes two LED's per port, 1=yellow and 2 = green/orange. Of course, this unit is fully RoHS compliant.

The 0810-1X4T-36-F MAGJACK connector from Bel Fuse replaces the following parts:
0810-1X4T-36 (which was the same unit, but not RoHS compliant)
0810-1X4T-06 (which was the same unit, but not RoHS, and only rated for 0-70 c)
0810-1X4T-06-F (end of life)
08B0-1X4T-06-F (same unit, but only rated for 0-70c)
08B0-1X4T-36-F (same unit, but 15mi gold plate on leads vs 50mi)

The Symbol (Motorola) VC5090 mobile computer has an internal antenna that is often limited because it becomes "shielded" by a forklift's metallic roll cage. However, there is an RPSMA style connector in the rear of the unit that allows you to attach an external antenna to the VC5090.

Symbol (Motorola) suggests using a WTS2450 - RPSMA model antenna (formerly manufactured by Centurion Wireless)in conjunction with a magnetic mount. The only vendor of such an antenna kit is ARCADIAN SALES.

This is just a quick update for warehouse professionals that are using the VC5090 mobile computer from Symbol, now Motorola. Although this kit will operate at both 2.4ghz and 5ghz for 802.11 a,b,and g, it is only rated for indoor use.

Just got done chatting with a new customer in Mumbai, India. He was looking for magnetics (impedance matching transformers, 1:1 turns ratio, both TX and RX) for the ENC28J60 Stand-Alone Ethernet Controller with SPI Interface From Microchip. See datasheet at:

Microchip's ENC28J60 is a 28-pin, 10BASE-T stand alone Ethernet Controller with on board MAC & PHY, 8 Kbytes of Buffer RAM and an SPI serial interface. With a small foot print package size the ENC28J60 minimizes complexity, board space and cost. Target applications include VoIP, Industrial Automation, Building Automation, Home Control, Security and Instrumentation.

Well, this customer was in luck because i personally worked with Microchip to specify the best magnetics solution for their chip. Ultimately, thye decided to go with a MagJack 08B0-1X1T-06-F1 solution from BEL, or Bel Fuse Inc. The MagJack is an RJ45 connector with integrated 10/100 base T magnetics, four 75 ohm termination resistors and a 1000 picofarad, 2000 volt capacitor. The device is completely shielded for enhanced EMI performance, and has two ultra-bright LED indicators for link and activity.
